Based on 353 reviewsRestoran Terapung Teluk Bayu is widely recognized for its unique dining experience, offering fresh seafood sourced directly from underwater cages surrounding the floating restaurant. Guests appreciate the serene and distinctive ambiance enhanced by a brief boat ride across the river, which adds to the charm of the visit. The food is generally praised for its good taste and affordable pricing. While the staff are often described as friendly, some feedback highlights room for improvement in service efficiency, especially during busy times. Common logistical challenges include limited parking, tricky access routes, and narrow roads leading to the jetty. The availability of on-site chalets and a surau adds to the convenience for visitors seeking a longer stay or prayer facilities.
The restaurant serves fresh seafood. The taste not bad, only the service can be improves. You need to call for reservation, if you it will take time to serves your food. Waze for location.
How I wish they will widen the road a little bit more! It's inconvenient. Location is a bit tricky if you unfamiliar. Parking is also a problem. Very limited. Once you arrived there go to end of Jetty and the staff will come with a boat. That is your transport to cross the river to the restaurant and it's free. The fresh seafoods are all around you. They kept it in underwater cages. The foods tasted good. The waiting is long enough for you to take photos of the surrounding. Price is reasonable. If you on a strict budget, they will suggest which menus for you.
A unique place to get seafoods. You will need to take a boat to go to the restaurant. The dining area is surrounded with fish cages. All the seafood are taken fresh from the cages. The foods tasted really good. Price is affordable. They have surau for Muslim to pray. They also have about 8 units of chalet connected to the restaurant. Limited parking space as there are guests park their cars there while they go fishing.
Nice ambient, food & very friendly staff. Went for early dinner & weekday
Restoran Terapung Teluk Bayu sits quietly on the Merbok River, about 20 minutes from Sungai Petani town. Getting there is already part of the charm—you park by the jetty, hop on a small boat, and within a minute you’re gliding across calm water towards the floating restaurant. The short ride sets the tone: peaceful, a little adventurous, and very different from the usual dinner outing. From the deck, the view is soothing—wide stretches of river, framed by mangrove trees and open sky. As the sun drops lower, the water reflects warm light, and the restaurant itself feels almost like a retreat. The seafood is as fresh as it gets, drawn straight from their own cages beneath the water. Butter prawns come with golden crispy threads, each bite juicy and rich. Black pepper mussels arrive steaming hot, bold with spice yet still carrying the natural sweetness of the shellfish. Siakap bakar is smoky and tender, while the kerapu stim lemon is bright and sharp, cutting through with citrus. The salted egg crab is messy, indulgent, and impossible to stop eating—the yolk clings thickly to every shell. It’s the combination that makes this place memorable: the river setting, the boat ride, and food that tastes straight from the source. A dinner here feels unhurried, genuine, and deeply satisfying.
The entrance could be a lil but scary for the first timer, especially if you come at night. Overall food taste is good. Generous portion. Skip the jug as it would only filled with ice - 75% i would say.
